The Faculty of the Law of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi, has inducted over two hundred and sixty newly admitted Bachelor of Law (LLB) students of the Faculty to initiate them for the academic work ahead. The ceremony which was under the Chairmanship of the Provost of the College of Humanities and Social Science, Professor Charles Ofosu Marfo, saw students, faculty, alumni, and the media in attendance.
The Supervising High Court Judge, His Lordship Justice Kofi Akrowiah, administered the Induction Oath.
The Acting Dean of the Faculty of Law, Dr. Chris Adomako-kwakye, said the first-year students being inducted are the 21st batch of students admitted into the Faculty since its establishment. He revealed that the Faculty is welcoming new students to pursue an excellent legal education through the induction ceremony.
According to Dr. Adomako-Kwakye, it is also to emphasise the importance of the duties that come with starting a path in legal education toward one of the most prestigious and admired professions.
The Acting Dean said the KNUST Faculty of Law is a thriving Faculty in a time when the legal profession is undergoing significant changes, and there are uncertainties in the coming decades in light of reforms and regulations of professional legal education.
Dr. Adomako-Kwakye further said that, for law students to thrive, adapt, and lead in the world, they must have the ideal combination of abilities, the best foundational education, and practical training. The Faculty, therefore, takes deliberate, strategic action in response to this dynamic environment, in both attitude and practice, he added.
He said the Faculty maintains a thriving moot court and law clinic programme to help build advocacy abilities. Since its foundation, the Faculty has participated in several regional, national, and international moot court contests and has been successful in all such contests.
In his keynote address, an alumnus and the Managing Director of Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC), Nana Akwasi Awuah, congratulated the newly admitted students for being inducted into the law programme.
Nana Akwasi Awuah said the study of law will open them up for the law profession, which is an important, exciting, prestigious, and rewarding career with opportunities to change the world. Nana Awuah indicated that as they begin their academic journey, they should strive to achieve excellence as the study of law is really hard work.
He was of the view that legal education is daunting. Some aspects of their study of law will make them question their beliefs, others will make them study into the night, and other principles being studied will leave them confused as well as sometimes reconsider their decision to study law. However, in all these, legal education is noble and an incredibly amazing journey that requires hard work and consistency on their part to enable them to succeed.
The PMMC Director also urged the students to help share knowledge with their friends who may have challenges in their academic work as it takes nothing from them but make them better students. Ending his speech, he also encouraged them to find a balance between academic work and leisure.
